What's it like to work at Microsoft? Data says it's pretty awesome

Despite the tough love it gets, Microsoft ($NASDAQ:MSFT) is a pretty great place to work, according to the Glassdoor ratings posted by employees.

  • Satya Nadella consistently ranks near the top of all CEOs - currently with a 96% approval rating (which would place him in the top 25 CEOs in the world, ahead of Mike Bloomberg at 92%, Tim Cook with 92%, and Jeff Bezos at 87%.
  • A remarkable 84% of Microsoft employees say they would recommend their workplace to their friends.
  • Employee views of the company's business outlook is an excellent 74% (that may seem low, but very few companies rank much higher on Glassdoor).
  • A healthy 37% of all company overall ratings are a full five out of five stars.

Microsoft Glassdoor

The vast majority of Microsoft overall ratings on Glassdoor are either 5-star or 4-star, with a negligible number of 1-star ratings. And the mix has only been improving over time.

The world cloud at the top of this article comes from headlines that employees placed on their Glassdoor reviews, which Thinknum aggregates as part of its data trail. The top 10 adjectives people used to describe their experience at Microsoft were:

  1. Great
  2. Good
  3. Big
  4. Best
  5. Awesome
  6. Bad
  7. Excellent
  8. Amazing
  9. Challenging
  10. Fantastic

What's the secret? CEO Nadella said in an interview with Bloomberg last year that he believes empathy is one of the most important traits in a successful business leader. "Most people think empathy is just something that you reserve for your life and your family and your friends, but the reality is that it's an existential priority of a business,"

As far as most Microsoft employees are concerned, he must be doing something right.
