AQR finally showing cuts in headcount and other investment groups hiring and firing

6 days ago by James Mattone in Features, Trends

As we continue through Q1 Earnings report season, an important time for investors of all levels, it's a good idea to see how investment groups — especially those who manage hedge funds — are growing or shrinking. Through LinkedIn ($NASDAQ:MSFT), we're able to get an idea of thousands of company's employee headcounts over time by taking a snapshot of their public employee count data every day.

The result? We're able to see trends that mimic, or predict, the latest news in the space.

For example, Bloomberg wrote in January about how AQR Capital Management ($AQR) is cutting jobs after a rough 2018. According to LinkedIn data, AQR saw a month-over-month decrease in employee headcount of 6.223% — or 71 employees — from April into May. This headcount is tracked through people removing AQR as their employer on the website (and does come with some caveats as we covered previously).

Meanwhile, celebrations are in order for Halcyon Capital Management ($HALCYONLLC), now known as Bardin Hill Investment Partners, which just surpassed 100 employees on LinkedIn. This is happening while the company goes through its rebrand and moves over to 299 Park Ave.

However, in looking back at the company's LinkedIn profile, this jump comes after the company lost a few heads on its LinkedIn profile while it was still known as Halcyon.

Still, Bardin Hill saw the biggest growth out of our 128-company index of hedge funds and capital management companies we tracked and compared in this Screener file. Below is a quick sample of the top companies we track, including AQR and Bardin Hill as bonus data points.

At a glance, all companies besides AQR are showing growth in LinkedIn, with BlackRock ($NYSE:BLK)  having the biggest growth in raw headcount. However, in terms of percentage growth, ODDO BHF ($ODDOBHF), a financial services group based in France, beat the competition with a near two percent increase in month-over-month growth.
